10 Winter Tips for Flawless Foundation

As the temperature drops, our skin responds with dryness, redness, and more. Not only does the icy air affect your skin, but indoor heating will dry it out. Spending your days indoors with this heat will result in a flaky, patchy, and aggravated complexion. Intense winter conditions can also cause eczema, rosacea, blotchiness, and more if you don’t get ahead of it.

It’s best to start early to prevent the winter blues... or blotchy reds… when it comes to your complexion. Here are 10 tips to get ahead of jack frost and prep your skin for the colder months.

1. First Things First: Take Care of Your Skin!

It all starts with healthy skin. If you want to keep your radiant glow all year round, it starts with preventative measures through skincare. All the following steps are made easier when you have a healthy base from the start.

It’s essential to always remove your makeup at the end of the day. Leaving your makeup on will irritate your face, clog your pores, and block your skin from getting the essential moisture it needs throughout the winter. Consider an oil cleanser, which thoroughly removes your makeup through moisturizing oils that you wipe off with a warm washcloth. It’s the best way to get rid of every trace of makeup without drying out your skin. When it comes to cleanser, try a creamier formula that doesn’t suds up too much. A gentle cleanser won’t strip your skin of its natural oils.

Many active skincare ingredients may contribute to skin dryness and inflammation. Acids like AHA, BHA, Lactic Acid, and Glycolic Acid are effective at exfoliation but can further increase dryness in the winter. Maybe switch to a gentler serum or switch your application of active serums to every other day or once a week instead of every day.

Last, but certainly not least, moisturize! Pick a gentle moisturizer free of fragrances and dyes. Apply this day and night liberally to provide a protective layer for your skin and hydrate parched complexions.

Bonus tip: Apply skincare right after you shower. The humidity of the shower will open your pores and cause your skin to absorb the products more effectively.

2. Don’t Forget Your SPF

Sunscreen in the winter?? Yes! As long as there is daylight, the sun doesn’t disappear in the winter months. One of the main causes of skin dryness, dehydration, and irritation is sun damage. Prolonged unprotected exposure to the sun increases texture and makes your skin age faster. Apply sunscreen after your moisturizer liberally in the morning before going about your day. Sunscreen is vital to all skin tones, ages, and conditions. There are many mineral and chemical options for all skin tones. When you protect your skin from the sun, you protect your glow, even through the coldest months of the year.

3. Choose the Correct Shade of Foundation

While sunscreen should be worn all year round, in the winter we tend to spend far less time outdoors. The days are shorter and the sun sets earlier. Most people have to switch to a lighter shade of foundation in the winter months. Luckily, we have 23 shades of foundation which cover a wide range of shades and undertones. Pick one up that’s a shade lighter than your summer shade to avoid your face not matching your neck.

4. Increase Your Moisture With a Humidifier

Indoor heat sucks all the moisture out of the air, leaving skin dry, flakey, and dehydrated. You can combat this by getting a humidifier. Leave it by your bed overnight to keep not just your skin hydrated, but also protect your nasal passages, hair, and eyes from winter dryness. Overnight, you will replenish the moisture in your home which will increase the humidity all day.

Bonus tip: Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to the water in your humidifier to add aromatherapy to your hydration ritual.

5. Start Your Base With a Hydrating Primer

Primer is the essential product to keep your skin glowing and flawless throughout the winter. Switch to a hydrating and glow-inducing primer for the colder months. Many primers add an additional glow with a subtle shimmer under your foundation. This will make your skin appear more hydrated and healthy. It will also help your foundation blend with your skin flawlessly. Add your primer after both your moisturizer and sunscreen.

6. Choose Cream Over Powder Products

Powders will further dry your skin and cause your complexion to appear powdery, dusty, and dry. No one wants that. Luckily, there are tons of cream alternatives to avoid powders. Our new contour and concealer palettes are all creams, so the majority of your base products will be cream-based. There are also cream blushes, highlighters, and eyeshadows. These will keep your complexion looking healthy and not cakey or dry.

7. Mix Moisturizer with Foundation

You can customize the hydration and dewiness of your foundation by mixing it with a moisturizer or hydrating primer. This will keep your skin looking healthy and glowy, even in the winter months. Our foundation is incredibly versatile, mixing well with primers and moisturizers. It’s also buildable, so you can apply sheer layers of foundation and put more in the areas that need more coverage without looking cakey. You can achieve both natural and full coverage when foundation is applied correctly!

8. Get a Flawless Application With a Foundation Blender Sponge

Choosing the right products for cold weather is important, but what about the tools to apply them with? Brushes can often leave streaks in the product application and pull at your skin, which causes dry skin to appear textured and flakey. Using a damp foundation blender sponge is a game-changer for applying makeup during the winter months.

Make sure to soak your beauty sponge and squeeze out the access water so it’s damp before applying makeup. Apply a small amount of product at a time by bouncing the sponge lightly over your skin. This will blend the product seamlessly without rubbing or irritating your skin.

9. Set Your Makeup With a Hydrating Mist

With so many options for setting spray it’s best to choose a dewy setting mist over a matte one in the winter. Even just a hydrating facial mist will work to melt all the makeup together on your face to have a fresh and healthy finish. If you use any powder products, this will protect from appearing dusty or cakey. You can even refresh your makeup throughout the day with a quick mist.

10. Stay Hydrated!

We’ve saved the most important tip for last: drink water! Drinking lots of water is one of the best things you can do for your overall health. In the cold months, staying hydrated will protect your skin from dryness and flakiness. This will ensure that as the temperatures drop, your foundation still stays flawless!

We hope these tips will help you keep your skin looking flawless all winter long!
